How we work
Our Creative Process
● PHASE 1
Discovery & Brand Positioning
Every project kicks off with a brand workshop where we'll dive into the history and future of your company, brand, project goals, audience, and competitors. From this foundation we’ll develop the brand positioning, which will be the North Star for all creative work moving forward.
● PHASE 2
Brand Identity
In Phase 2, we’ll explore a range of potential brand identity directions rooted in the brand positioning. Each direction will include key messaging, logo design, typography, color, imagery and visual motifs applied to sample touchpoints. We'll narrow in on one brand direction and refine into brand guidelines.
● PHASE 3
Brand Launch
Once we’ve established the brand identity, we’ll work together to bring the brand to life across a range of customer-facing touchpoints. Every project is unique and the deliverables in this phase vary based on your company’s goals, but often include art direction, web design, packaging design, social media design, deck design, and swag.
Frequently Asked Questions
We want to work with people who are thoughtful and curious—so we appreciate that you probably have questions. While every project is different and the default answer is, it depends, we’ve put together this guide to give you some insight into how we work.
-
The fresh perspective we bring is our secret sauce. Even when we’re operating in industries we’ve worked in before, we come with fresh eyes and an openness to new ideas, so we don’t focus on a single industry or type of client. This may feel counterintuitive—every industry has its complexities and nuances, after all—but our process is designed to embrace that ambiguity and find creative opportunity within it. In other words, our expertise is in brand building, not any one industry.
It is worth noting that all of our clients do share a few qualities: kindness, passion for their purpose, and a desire to create a bold new brand.
-
We like working closely with our clients as a creative partner and act as an extension of your design, marketing, or brand team during brand projects. We often have shared Slack channels and/or weekly creative syncs and will adjust to your company’s preferred communication style.
Most brand projects include three phases—Phases 1 and 2 are generally the most predictable, while Phase 3 is where the most customization happens.Phase 1: Discovery and Positioning (3+ weeks)
This is the phase where we get to know each other really, really well. Our goal in this phase is to understand everything we can about who you are, why you do what you do, and why that matters—then articulate all of that in a clear brand position. In the first few weeks, we’ll dive deep into research, play around with your product, put ourselves into your audience’s shoes, and have a lot of deep discussions with your team. All of that allows us to form a point of view, which we articulate in our brand positioning. This work is the foundation for everything we do in Phase 2 and Phase 3. If you've done some of this work already internally, great! We may be able to condense this phase, or build on the work you’ve done.Phase 2: Brand Building (4+ weeks)
In Phase 2, we create 2-3 creative concepts for the brand to explore the different ways that we can bring our strategy to life. Each direction includes a logo, typography, color palette, imagery style, and brand motifs applied to sample applications. For projects that include verbal identity and/or messaging, we’ll explore tonal directions in parallel with the visual identity to create three cohesive systems. After the first presentation in Phase 2, we'll narrow in on one visual direction and refine over two additional rounds of revisions.Phase 3: Brand Launch (Timing varies based on deliverables)
It all comes together in Phase 3. We’ll apply your brand to real world assets so that you can share your new identity with the world. The deliverables in this phase vary widely from project to project, but they often include web design, packaging design, art direction, and templates for social media, decks, and swag.
-
Most brand projects take 8-16 weeks depending on the complexity of your project deliverables and industry. We see the project proposal process as a collaborative one, so we’ll work closely with you to try to meet any milestones or launches on the horizon.
-
Most brand projects we take on include brand strategy and visual identity and start at $40k. We price each project based on the deliverables, timeline, and level of impact, so the best way to get an estimate for your project is to get in touch.
To give you a general sense, the projects you see on our website range between $50k-$90k. This is the typical range for a brand project that also includes verbal identity and launch assets like web design, print collateral, sales collateral, and social assets.
That being said, we do take on sprints or smaller projects for causes that we feel passionate about, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re working on a big vision with a small budget.
-
We typically book up 2 months in advance for full brand projects. This allows us to prioritize quality over quantity, giving each of our clients the time and attention they deserve (and paid for). For smaller projects and in rare cases, we may be able to start sooner, so it’s always best to reach out for exact availability.
-
We have several years of experience in marketing web design. We offer marketing and e-commerce website design as part of larger brand projects but do not offer it alone. We do not offer product design or development. If we are working together on a branding project, we can help source designers and developers that may be a good fit for this type of work.
-
We primarily work with founders and companies directly, though we occasionally partner with other studios, agencies or individual creatives as an extension of their brand team.
